Juventafest is an annual international theater festival in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, that celebrates youth theater. It usually takes place in September and features shows by young theater groups from Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries. The festival focuses on creativity and social themes and has become an important platform for young performers, directors, and theater professionals. It has helped make Sarajevo known as a city of culture.

The festival began in 2013, founded by Bosnian theater professionals led by Jasna Diklić to promote youth theater and give young artists from diverse backgrounds a place to collaborate. It is organized by the Juventafest Association and aims to develop theater skills and help young people express themselves through art. The founders wanted theater to enrich Sarajevo’s cultural life and give youth a chance to explore social issues creatively.

Over the years, Juventafest has grown and now attracts troupes from Europe and beyond, becoming one of the Balkans’ leading youth theater festivals. Its mission is to empower young people through theater and promote intercultural exchange. The festival supports youth theater, addresses social issues, offers education and training, and fosters international collaboration.

Juventafest lasts several days with performances, workshops, masterclasses, and panel discussions at many venues across Sarajevo, including theaters, cultural centers, and outdoor spaces. The main focus is the performances by youth groups, which cover drama, comedy, experimental theater, and adaptations of classics.

Workshops teach acting, directing, movement, voice, stage design, and dramaturgy. Panels explore theater’s role in society, challenges for young artists, and the future of youth theater. The festival ends with awards for Best Performance, Best Actor/Actress, Best Director, and the Audience Award.

The festival helps involve young people in the arts, giving them a voice to discuss social issues. It also boosts cultural tourism to Sarajevo and promotes intercultural dialogue by inviting groups from many countries. Juventafest has hosted groups from countries such as Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Austria, and Germany.

Like many events, it faces funding and sponsorship challenges. It relies on government support, cultural organizations, and private sponsors, which can limit its ability to expand or invite more international participants. Still, organizers remain committed to growing Juventafest as a premier platform for youth theater.
