Julian Talbot
Julian Talbot was born on March 24, 1985, in Wahnapitae, Ontario, Canada. He is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 179 pounds. He played defense and occasionally center, shoots left, and finished his career with the Nottingham Panthers in the Elite Ice Hockey League. Talbot went undrafted and played professionally from 2006 to 2020.
Junior hockey and early promise
Talbot played in the Ontario Hockey League for the Ottawa 67’s, following his older brother Joe. In his rookie 2002–03 season he had 10 goals and 28 points in 62 games. His scoring continued to rise in the next two seasons. He was nominated for the Hanley Trophy as the team’s most sportsmanlike player in 2003–04 and 2004–05. In his final junior season (2005–06) he captained the 67’s and finished with 30 goals and 77 points in 65 games.
Turning professional
Talbot began his pro career in the ECHL with the Alaska Aces in 2006–07, scoring 20 goals and 53 points in 63 games and earning a spot on the ECHL All-Star Team. He also made his American Hockey League debut with the Providence Bruins that season. He scored his first AHL goal on February 16, 2007, and led Alaska in playoff scoring with 20 points in 15 games as they reached the conference finals.
Blues organization and rising in the minors
Talbot attended the St. Louis Blues’ training camp in 2007 and was sent to their AHL affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen. In his first full AHL season he led the Rivermen in goals and earned a two-year contract with the Blues on March 19, 2008. He finished the 2007–08 season with 24 goals in 78 games. In 2008–09 he had 20 goals and 43 points in 65 games and led the team with 21 power-play points. In 2009–10 he put up 17 goals and 32 points in 76 games. On June 17, 2010, he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche and signed a one-year contract with them on July 2, 2010. He began the 2010–11 season with the Lake Erie Monsters in the AHL.
Europe and later years
Talbot moved to Europe to play for Eisbären Berlin in 2011–12, scoring 36 points in 49 games and helping the team win the league title. In 2012–13 he switched from center to defense, and his strong play helped Berlin win another title, while he led the playoffs with 19 points in 13 games. After stints with EC KAC in Austria in 2017–18 and Eispiraten Crimmitschau in DEL2 in 2018–19, he spent the 2019–20 season with the Nottingham Panthers in the UK, before retiring on September 11, 2020.
