Joseph T. Edgar
Joseph Tappen Edgar (April 1, 1910 – November 27, 1990) was an American politician from Maine. A Republican from Bar Harbor, he attended Princeton University and married Margaret Sanford in 1934.
Edgar was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1954. After his first term he was elected Speaker of the Maine House, serving from 1957 to 1961. In 1961 he briefly served in the Maine Senate representing Hancock County from January to June, before resigning and being replaced by John B. Ellis.
In 1967 the Maine Legislature elected him Secretary of State, a post he held until 1974 when he retired and was succeeded by Democrat Markham L. Gartley. Edgar died in Bar Harbor in 1990 at the age of 80.
