Joseph Horace Lewis
Joseph Horace Lewis (October 29, 1824 – July 6, 1904) was a Kentucky lawyer, Confederate general, and American politician. He grew up near Glasgow, Kentucky, and became a lawyer after studying at Centre College. He began his political career as a Whig, serving in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1850 to 1855. After the Whig Party collapsed, he joined the Democrats and later unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 1856 and 1860.
When the Civil War began, Lewis joined the Confederate Army and became colonel of the 6th Kentucky Infantry. After the Battle of Chickamauga, he was promoted to brigadier general and led the Orphan Brigade for the remainder of the war.
Following the war, he returned to Glasgow to practice law. He was elected again to the Kentucky House in 1868, serving as chair of the Education Committee. In 1870, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to fill a vacancy and won a full term in the next election, serving until 1873.
After leaving Congress, Lewis served as a judge on the Kentucky Court of Appeals from 1874 to 1898. He married Sarah Rogers (who died in 1858) and later Cassandra F. Flournoy Johnson in 1883, with whom he had two children, John and Eliza.
He died on July 6, 1904, in Scott County, Kentucky, and is buried in Glasgow Cemetery.
