Joice Maduaka
Joice Maduaka, born on 30 September 1973 in London, England, is a British sprinter who competed mainly in the 100 metres and the 200 metres, and sometimes the 400 metres. She is best known for her success at the British Athletics Championships, where she has won 22 medals—the most by any athlete—including six titles in the 100 metres and three in the 200 metres.
Athletics career
Maduaka began to rise in the mid-1990s. She won the British 100 metres title at the 1998 AAA Championships and went on to win a bronze medal for England in the 4x100 metres relay at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. She claimed both the 100 metres and 200 metres titles at the 1999 AAA Championships and was selected for Great Britain at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She won the 100 metres British title again in 2002, and added another Commonwealth Games bronze medal in the 4x100 metres relay at Manchester in 2002. She won the 100 metres again in 2003 and the 200 metres title in 2004.
In 2004, Maduaka represented Great Britain at the Athens Olympics in the 200 metres. In 2006, she was the fastest British athlete over 100 metres and finished second in the 4x100 metres at the British AAA Championships, also performing strongly in the 200 metres. She finished fourth in the 100 metres final and was part of the British team that finished second in the 4x100 metres relay at the 2006 European Championships. At the 2007 European Cup, she came second in the 100 metres, won the 200 metres, and helped Britain win the relay. She later represented Great Britain at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka (200 metres and the 4x100 metres relay) and at the 1999 World Championships in Seville and the 2003 World Championships in Paris.
Controversy
In 2006, during the World Athletics Cup, a lane assignment mix-up involving the Europe team and the United States led to confusion over baton exchanges. The United States was disqualified, but Europe was not, and the race was not rerun.
