John Newman III
John Edward Newman III (born August 2, 1999) is an American basketball player for Niners Chemnitz in the Basketball Bundesliga and EuroCup. He played college basketball for Clemson and Cincinnati.
High school and early career
Newman attended Greensboro Day School in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he helped win three state titles. As a senior he averaged 14.7 points, 5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game and was named MVP of the NCISAA 3A State Championship. He finished his prep career with about 1,400 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 steals.
College journey
Newman committed to Clemson in 2017. As a freshman he averaged 2.1 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. He had notable moments, including Clemson’s first win at North Carolina on January 11, 2020 (17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals) and a career-high 23 points against Louisville on February 15, 2020. As a sophomore he averaged 9.5 points and 3.9 rebounds. His junior year was limited by knee problems, averaging 3.7 points and 2 rebounds.
After his junior season he planned to transfer to UNC Greensboro but later decommitted and joined Cincinnati, following coach Wes Miller. At Cincinnati, he averaged 6.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1 steal in the 2021–22 season, then redshirted after suffering a damaged meniscus in his graduate year. In his final season he averaged 9.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
Professional career
Newman went undrafted in the 2024 NBA draft and signed with Kortrijk Spurs of the BNXT League on July 5, 2024. He later signed with Niners Chemnitz of the Basketball Bundesliga on June 26, 2025.
International play
He was part of the United States team at the 2019 Summer Universiade in Italy, which won the gold medal. He averaged 13.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, including 20 points and 7 rebounds in the championship game.
Personal
His father, John Newman II, played basketball at James Madison in the 1980s, and a distant cousin, Johnny Newman, played at Richmond and went on to a pro career.
