John Luttrell Murphy
John Luttrell Murphy (1842 – February 27, 1912) was a judge who briefly served on the Montana Territorial Supreme Court. Appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant on February 4, 1871, his tenure was controversial and Grant withdrew the appointment about a year later. Murphy left the court on October 4, 1872; Justice Servis took his place.
Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, he served as a Major in the Union Army during the Civil War and passed the Tennessee Bar in 1867. After Montana, he practiced law in Bozeman and then moved to San Francisco, where he worked as a federal prosecutor and later as City and County Attorney in the 1880s. His wife was Viola. He died in Knoxville at age 70.
