Joe Henderson (runner)
Joe Henderson, born June 3, 1943, is an American runner, coach, and writer. He was the chief editor of Runner's World and now writes for Marathon & Beyond. Since 1982 he has had a weekly column called "Joe Henderson's Running Commentary." He has written or coauthored more than two dozen books on running, including Marathon Training. He was born in Illinois and grew up in Iowa, started running at 14, and was a state champion in track and cross country. He ran for Drake University and began his writing career at the Des Moines Register in 1966. He also wrote for Track and Field News from 1967 to 1969. In 1970 he became chief editor of Runner's World, working with Bob Anderson. He helped bring Dr. George Sheehan on as medical editor after being introduced by Hal Higdon during the 1968 Olympics. Henderson wrote for Runner's World for about 33 years and was Anderson's first full-time employee. In 2001 he co-authored The Running Encyclopedia with Richard Benyo. He speaks at running expos and is known as an expert on running. He teaches running classes at the University of Oregon and coaches marathon training teams in Eugene, Oregon.
