Jerry Taylor Veterans Plaza is a veterans memorial in Sunnyside, Washington. It was dedicated in 1977 and named after Jerry Taylor, Sunnyside’s former mayor and World War II veteran. Plans to rebuild the plaza as a larger memorial began by 2006. Construction started in 2014, and by 2016 four granite panels were installed. By 2021 the memorial had nineteen blocks, each weighing about 6,000 pounds, spanning the length of a city block on South 9th Street. When finished, the project will include 42 blocks and will be the largest veterans memorial in the Pacific Northwest. The panels list servicemembers’ names and often include text about veteran issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder; one component is a 9/11 memorial.
