Jenins
Jenins (Romansh: Gianin) is a small municipality in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, in the Landquart Region. It lies near Maienfeld and Seewis im Prättigau and sits about 635 meters above sea level. Jenins covers about 10.5 square kilometers.
History and shape of the land
Jenins was first mentioned in 1139 and again in 1142. The area is largely agricultural, with about half of the land used for farming and around 40% covered by forests. A small part is settled, and the rest is non-productive terrain such as rivers and mountains.
People and language
About 915 people live in Jenins (as of 2020). The vast majority speak German (around 94%), with small numbers speaking Romansh and English. The town has a low unemployment rate and a small share of foreign nationals.
Administration
Jenins is part of the Landquart Region (since 2017; it was previously in the Maienfeld sub-district). The local mayor (as of 2014) was Baseli Werth.
Economy and education
In 2005, the primary sector (farming) employed around 107 people across about 29 businesses. The secondary sector had about 35 workers in 8 businesses, and the tertiary sector about 107 workers in 14 businesses. About 77% of people aged 25–64 have completed upper secondary education or higher.
Sights and culture
Neu-Aspermont Castle is a Swiss heritage site of national significance. The Greisinger Museum opened in 2013 and houses the Greisinger Collection, Bernd Greisinger’s private collection focused on J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. The museum is a non-profit foundation with a distinctive round hobbit door at the main entrance, and many rooms are underground. Building began in 2008 to showcase the collection.
