Early life
Janie Takeda-Reed was born Janette Miiko Takeda on April 15, 1993, in Placentia, California. She grew up with two sisters in a softball-loving family. She attended El Dorado High School and played for the OC Batbusters. She bats left-handed, throws right-handed, and wore Oregon’s number 19 and Team USA’s number 9.

College career
Takeda played for the University of Oregon from 2012 to 2015 and graduated in 2015 with a journalism degree. She was a three-time NFCA All-American and a three-time First Team All-Pac-12 selection. She set several school records, including 309 career hits, 204 career runs, 102 stolen bases, and eight triples in a season.
