Cat-Man and Kitten

Cat-Man and Kitten are classic Golden Age superheroes created by Irwin Hasen (Cat-Man) and Charles M. Quinlan (Kitten). Cat-Man is David Merryweather, who was raised by tigers in Burma and gained powers like super-strength, agility, night vision, and the legendary nine lives. He returns to America to fight crime and wears a green and orange costume with a black cat-head emblem. Kitten is Katie Conn, an 11-year-old circus acrobat who, after Cat-Man helps her, becomes his partner in a red and yellow costume.

They first appeared in Crash Comics in 1940, then starred in Cat-Man Comics starting in 1941. The series also had a different Australian version during World War II, and AC Comics later revived the characters in the 1980s. Cat-Man and Kitten fought a wide range of foes, from criminals to Nazis and bizarre villains. Katie grew from a sidekick into a full partner. In some retellings, Kitten ages to adulthood after Cat-Man transfers one of his nine lives to her, leading to marriage in those stories. The duo also joined the Vault of Superheroes and teamed up with Miss Victory and Femforce; their nemesis Dr. Macabre was revived as well.

Because Cat-Man and Kitten are in the public domain, they have appeared in many reprints and new stories, including Dynamite Entertainment’s Project Superpowers story starting in 2008, where Cat-Man sometimes appears as a feral Man-Cat and Kitten appears as part of teen sidekicks. In 2022 a new Cat-Man and Kitten series was announced by Jeff Parker and Joseph Cooper. In 2023, YouTuber Austin McConnell released a pilot for an animated web series called The Sensational Cat-Man.
