Intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve

The intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve is a small, outer branch of the superficial fibular nerve. It is the more lateral of the two terminal branches, the other being the medial dorsal cutaneous nerve.

It travels over the third intermetatarsal space and then splits into two nerves: the lateral dorsal digital nerve for the third toe and the medial dorsal digital nerve for the fourth toe.

The superficial fibular nerve ends by dividing into the intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve and the medial dorsal cutaneous nerve after exiting the deep fascia in the lower leg.

Through its two branches, the intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve provides sensation to the top of the 3rd and 4th toes and to the outer (lateral) side of the foot and ankle. It also communicates with the sural nerve.

Sometimes some of its lateral branches are supplied by the lateral dorsal cutaneous nerve.
