If You Want to Be My Woman
If You Want to Be My Woman is a country song written and originally recorded by Merle Haggard with his band the Strangers. It first appeared on his 1967 album I’m a Lonesome Fugitive. Haggard re-recorded the song in 1989 and released it in December as the third single from his album 5:01 Blues. The song reached number 23 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and number 15 on Canada’s RPM Country Tracks chart. It was Haggard’s last top-40 country hit, as changes in the country music industry in the early 1990s hurt many classic artists. The track was co-produced by Merle Haggard and Mark Yeary, the Strangers’ keyboardist.
