High Sheriff of Durham: This article lists the high sheriffs of County Durham, England. In most counties, the high sheriff is the oldest secular royal office. In Durham, the sheriff was appointed by and answered to the Bishop of Durham until 1836, when the Crown took over. The High Sheriff was the main law enforcement officer in the county, but over time most duties have moved to other offices or ended, so today the role is mostly ceremonial. The High Sheriff changes every March.
