Hermann 22
The Hermann 22 is an American trailerable cruising sailboat designed by Richard P. Ketcham Jr. and first built in 1961 by Ted Hermann’s Boat Shop in Seaford, New York. Also known as the Hermann 20 for its waterline length, the fiberglass monohull features wood trim, a masthead sloop rig, and a fixed stub long keel with a centerboard. It displaces 4,500 lb and carries 300 lb of ballast. Draft is 4.00 ft with the centerboard down and 2.00 ft with it up, making it suitable for shallow water and trailer transport. The boat is 22.00 ft long overall, 20.00 ft at the waterline, with a 9.50 ft beam, and a hull speed of about 6 knots. It has an 8 hp Palmer inboard engine, a 10-gallon fuel tank, and a 15-gallon water tank. Inside, it sleeps four: a bow V-berth and two straight settee berths in the main cabin. The galley sits under the companionway ladder with a two-burner stove and sink, and the head is just aft of the bow cabin on the port side. Cabin headroom is 52 inches. The design emphasizes a roomy cockpit for daysailing and comfortable cruising. A 2010 review noted its classic early-1960s look and generous cockpit but cautioned that the rudder seems sized for powerboats and the sail area is modest for the boat’s heavy hull.
