Heart-Shaped Glasses (When the Heart Guides the Hand)
Heart-Shaped Glasses (When the Heart Guides the Hand) is a song by American rock band Marilyn Manson from the album Eat Me, Drink Me. It was released as the album’s first single, with a digital release on April 24, 2007 and a CD single following in late May, ahead of the album’s release on June 5, 2007. The track is 5 minutes and 6 seconds long and was written by Marilyn Manson and Tim Sköld, who also produced the song.
The song grew from Manson’s reading of Lolita and his relationship with his then-girlfriend Evan Rachel Wood. He has said the idea came from Wood visiting him in heart-shaped glasses, a reference to the Kubrick poster for Lolita, and the line in the chorus that captures that moment.
Initially, “Putting Holes In Happiness” was planned as the first single, but the plan changed. In addition to the standard formats, a Hot Topic exclusive CD single was released, and an acoustic version was performed on BBC Radio 1 on May 23, 2007.
The music video was directed by Manson using a 3-D system developed by James Cameron. It features Wood and Manson in provocative scenes, including kissing while drenched in blood, driving on a dark highway, and a dramatic crash. The highly explicit content sparked controversy and rumors about whether the sex scenes were real. In 2022, Wood claimed the sex was real, while Manson and his representatives disputed that claim.
Previews and clips appeared online before the release, and the video officially premiered on the German site sevenload on May 8, 2007.
