Harminder Singh Dua is an Indian-British eye doctor and researcher. He is chair and professor of ophthalmology at the University of Nottingham and leads the Division of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Born in Jalandhar, Punjab, India, he studied medicine in Nagpur. He was an associate professor at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia before moving to Nottingham in 1994. Dua has held many leadership roles, including co-editor-in-chief of the British Journal of Ophthalmology; president of the European Vision and Eye Research Foundation (EVERf) and of EuCornea; chair of Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis; and a member of the American Ophthalmological Society. In 2011 he was elected president of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the UK. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2019 for services to ophthalmology. In 2021 he was named Sheriff of Nottingham for 2021-22. In 2013 his team reported a new thin layer in the cornea, called Dua's layer, about 15 micrometres thick, between the stroma and Descemet's membrane; the discovery sparked debate because some in medicine prefer not to use eponyms. In 2001 he proposed the Dua classification for chemical injuries in the eye.
