Halsey, born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane on September 29, 1994, in Edison, New Jersey, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She first gained attention online with self-made music and signed with Astralwerks in 2014. She released her debut EP, Room 93, later that year.

Her first full album, Badlands (2015), was a big hit and helped establish her bold, moody style. It included popular songs like Ghost, New Americana, and Colors. In 2016, she teamed up with The Chainsmokers on the hit single Closer, which topped charts around the world and earned critical acclaim.

Halsey’s second album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (2017), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and featured songs such as Now or Never and Bad at Love. The 2018 collaboration Eastside with Benny Blanco and Khalid also became a major chart success. That year she moved to Capitol Records. Her 2018 single Without Me became her biggest solo hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Her third album, Manic, released in 2020 and became a global success. The project included personal and storytelling songs, and its lead single Without Me solidified her status as a top solo artist. In 2021 she released If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, a darker, industrial-influenced album produced with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross; a companion film followed the release.

In 2024, Halsey released The Great Impersonator, with singles like The End, Lucky, Lonely Is the Muse, and Ego, and she continued to expand her creative work with film and live performances, including orchestral shows.

Halsey is known for blending pop with electronic, alternative R&B, and rock influences, often described as alternative pop. She has acted in film and TV, and voiced Wonder Woman in the film Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. She has performed on Saturday Night Live and in other large venues, sometimes with live orchestras.

Beyond music, Halsey has spoken openly about health and used her platform for advocacy. She has bipolar disorder, ADHD, endometriosis, and later lupus and other conditions, and she has supported suicide prevention, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, and climate and racial justice causes. She identifies as bisexual and has discussed her complex relationship with fame and her desire to tell honest stories through her art.

Her stage name, Halsey, is an anagram of her first name and a nod to a New York City subway stop near where she spent time as a teenager. Her music, personal style, and open conversations about mental health and social issues have made her a prominent voice in pop and indie music today.

Halsey has had high-profile relationships and a son with Alev Aydin, born in 2021. In 2024 she announced engagement to Avan Jogia. She remains active in music and in causes she cares about.
