HIV Clinical Resource
HIV Clinical Resource is a New York State service that provides HIV-related health information for doctors and patients. It began in 1999 through a partnership between the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute and the Johns Hopkins University Division of Infectious Diseases. The program creates guidelines to help healthcare providers treat people with HIV and to connect them with related services. It also offers informational brochures for care providers and the public.
The guidelines cover medical care for adults, adolescents, and children, as well as prevention in medical settings. They are designed to support real-world decision-making. While many recommendations come from clinical trials, those trials can take years. When evidence is limited, experts use case reports, epidemiology, and committee consensus to decide best practices.
Guidelines are reviewed and updated by committees of clinicians and other care providers, and they include input from a consumer advisory committee to reflect patients’ experiences and preferences. Each guideline is reviewed by consumers before it is finalized.
