Gyaku-zuki

Content sourced from Wikipedia, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.

Gyaku-zuki, or reverse punch, is a straight punch used in karate and other martial arts. It is performed with the fist opposite the forward leg. From a front stance, rotate the hips and drive the punch with the rear hand to add power. It is usually a counterattack done from a standing position, without a big forward step. This contrasts with oi-zuki, the forward punch used when stepping in to attack. Variations exist that add a kick or slide the body forward to increase momentum, but the core idea is a strong straight punch from the rear hand.
