Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) is a government-established, research-focused university in Gwangju, South Korea, founded in 1993. Its motto is “A Proud Creator of Future Science and Technology.” GIST aims to train highly skilled scientists and researchers and to strengthen collaboration between industry and academia. It is part of a group of research universities that includes KAIST, UNIST, UST, POSTECH, and DGIST.

All classes at GIST are taught in English, and master’s and doctoral theses are written in English as well. Doctoral students must publish at least one first-author paper in a scientific journal to earn their degree. In 2001, GIST introduced a thesis quality certification program to raise research standards.

In 2010, GIST College was established to offer Korea’s first liberal-arts–oriented science curriculum for undergraduates. This program combines liberal arts education with the university’s strong research resources, allowing undergraduates to benefit from graduate-level knowledge and research opportunities.

GIST is known for its strong research output. In the 2016/2017 QS World University Rankings, it ranked second in the world for citations per faculty. In the Times Higher Education ranking for 2014–2015, it was 96th in Engineering & Technology.

As of January 2018, GIST had about 2,122 students: 868 undergraduates and 1,254 postgraduates. The campus is located at 123 Cheomdan-gwagiro, Oryong-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, South Korea.
