Greatest Hits (Spice Girls album)
Greatest Hits is a compilation album by the Spice Girls, released worldwide on 7 November 2007. In the United States, it was sold first through Victoria’s Secret stores on 6 November and received a full release on 15 January 2008. It was the group’s first new release in seven years and was supported by a worldwide concert tour. The album sold about 1.7 million copies in 2007 and was the best-selling girl group album of that year. It re-entered charts in 2012 after the London Olympics.
The only new song on the album, “Headlines (Friendship Never Ends),” was released to radio on 23 October 2007, digitally on 5 November, and commercially on 19 November. It was the official Children in Need single for 2007 and reached the top three on the UK Physical Singles Chart.
The Spice Girls confirmed their reunion in 2007, holding a press conference at The O2 on 28 June to announce a world tour starting in Vancouver on 2 December. Tickets sold out quickly, and the tour covered six continents with many dates selling out. It was reported that each member earned about £10 million for the reunion.
The album came in several formats, including a limited edition box set with extras like a karaoke CD, a remix CD, a DVD of music videos, postcards, and a friendship bracelet. In the US, the release began at Victoria’s Secret with downloadable remixes, and the full US release followed later. The album was also released digitally on iTunes on the same day as the US release.
The cover features a jewel-encrusted Spice Girls logo, with each letter representing a member; the design was created with input from the group.
The Spice Girls performed at the 2007 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and on Children in Need that year to promote the album, and a documentary about the reunion, Spice Girls: Giving You Everything, aired later in 2007.
Reception was mixed: some critics praised the nostalgia and songs, while others felt the group had moved on. Commercially, the UK version peaked at No. 2 and Australia reached No. 1; the US market was hindered by the limited release. By 2019 the album was certified double platinum in the UK, with additional certifications elsewhere.
