2001 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A
The 2001 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, also known as Brasileirão TAM 2001 for sponsorship reasons, was the 45th edition of Brazil’s top football league. It ran from August 1 to December 23, 2001. Twenty-eight teams competed, each playing the others once in the first stage (378 matches). The eight best teams advanced to the knockout rounds. The quarterfinals and semifinals were single-leg matches, and the finals were played over two legs. The four lowest-ranked teams were relegated to Série B for 2002.
Atlético Paranaense won their first Brazilian title. They, along with São Caetano, qualified for the 2002 Copa Libertadores. Grêmio qualified by winning the 2001 Copa do Brasil, and Flamengo qualified by winning the 2001 Copa dos Campeões.
Overall, 386 matches were played, with 1,105 goals scored (about 2.86 per match). Romário was the top scorer with 21 goals. The average attendance was 11,401 spectators per match.
