Goodbye Earth
Goodbye Earth is a 2024 South Korean science fiction drama on Netflix. It’s based on a novel by Kōtarō Isaka and directed by Kim Jin-min, with a cast that includes Ahn Eun-jin, Yoo Ah-in, Jeon Sung-woo, and Kim Yoon-hye. The series has 12 episodes, each about 48 to 65 minutes long.
The story is set in Woongcheon, with 200 days to go before an asteroid hits Earth on February 22, 2026. South Korea is under martial law as people panic. The wealthy flee to supposed safe zones, while many residents face shortages, crime, and despair. Four friends try to navigate the chaos: Jin Se-kyeong, a former teacher volunteering at city hall; Ha Yun-sang, Se-kyeong’s scientist fiancé; Kang In-a, an army captain; and Father Woo Sung-jae, a priest who helps the community.
As they dig deeper, they uncover a human trafficking ring run by escaped criminals. The ring is linked to an elitist group trying to fund a last escape from the country. Plans to use two planes to leave lead to danger and tragedy when negotiations fail and one plane can’t land and the other crashes.
In the final days, people seek peace or settle old scores. Se-kyeong and Yun-sang marry, Sung-jae leaves the priesthood but stays to help, and In-a leaves the army. Se-kyeong also confronts the criminals she learned about.
Reception was mixed to negative. Some critics praised the strong performances and human moments, while others criticized the pacing and confusing time jumps. The show did well on Netflix, appearing in the Global Top 10 for non-English TV after its release. Production notes mention the release was delayed from 2023 and that the series was edited to minimize Yoo Ah-in’s screen time due to legal issues; it finally premiered on April 26, 2024.
