George Vane (born 1618)
Sir George Vane of Barnard Castle (baptised 10 May 1618 – 28 April 1679) was an English politician and landowner in the north of England. He was the second son of Sir Henry Vane the Elder and Frances d'Arcy, and he was knighted on 22 November 1640.
During the English Civil War, he served as High Sheriff of Durham for Parliament, starting in September 1645, and acted as treasurer of the county committee. He also seized and defended Raby Castle, the family home, for King Charles I early in Cromwell’s rebellion.
George Vane married Elizabeth Maddison, daughter of Sir Lionel Maddison of Rogerly, Durham. They lived at Long Newton, County Durham, and had a son named Lionel Vane.
He died on 28 April 1679 and was buried on 1 May 1679. He was the ancestor of the Vanes of Hutton Hall, Penrith, Cumbria, and of Sir Henry Vane-Tempest, 2nd Baronet.
