George Julian Selwyn Scovell was a British soldier and Liberal politician born in April 1881. He was the eldest surviving son of Captain G. T. Scovell. He studied at Haileybury and Imperial Service College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and he never married. He was awarded the CBE in 1919. Scovell served in the South African War (1901–02). During World War I he worked on the General Staff in Northern Command, York (1914–16); then as Assistant Adjutant-General at the War Office (1916–17); and as Deputy Director-General of Recruiting at the Ministry of National Service (1917–18). A Liberal who supported Prime Minister David Lloyd George and the Coalition Government, he became General Secretary of Lloyd George’s Coalition Liberal organisation in 1919, helping to form the National Liberal Party. In 1923 the Liberal parties merged again, and Scovell stood as the Liberal candidate for Broxtowe in the general election. He was unsuccessful and did not stand for Parliament again. He died on 16 April 1948.
