George Irumbayam
George Irumbayam is an Indian literary critic and literature researcher. He has written 39 literary books and 7 spiritual books. He was born on 19 December 1938 as the eldest child in a family of four.
Education and early life
George studied at several Kerala schools from 1945 to 1956, then attended St. Thomas College Pala (1956–57), Sacred Heart College Thevara (1958–61), University College Trivandrum (1961–62), and Maharaja’s College (1962–63). He earned master's degrees in Malayalam and English from Kerala University, a Master’s in Gandhism from Madurai University, and a PhD from Calicut University. He received first ranks in both BA and MA, along with the TK Joseph Gold Medal and the Dr. Godavarma Award for top marks.
Career
George began as a Malayalam college lecturer at Sacred Heart College, Thevara in 1963, and from 1966 taught in government colleges at Madappally, Kozhikode, and Palakkad. He later served as a professor at Thalassery and Calicut, and retired in 1994 as head of the department at Ernakulam Maharaja’s College, where he started in 1986. He edited novels and wrote many literary criticism books. He was on the editorial committees of Kerala Digest, Kolaya, Sahithya Niroopanam, and Keralsamskara, and he served as president of the Calicut Book Club. He also contributed to various government and university committees and academic councils.
Translations and spiritual works
George translated Gandhi’s autobiography into Malayalam, which sold over 400,000 copies in four years. He also translated a Sherlock Holmes book and wrote many spiritual books.
Personal life
George is married to Theresa Valavi, and they have three children: two sons, Jaison and Jesus, and a daughter, Sindhu. They live in Kochi.
