Gabriel Adams
Gabriel Adams (c. 1790 – June 5, 1864) was the 15th mayor of Pittsburgh, serving from 1847 to 1849. He followed William Kerr and was succeeded by John Herron. During his time as mayor, the Joseph Horne Company was founded, Mercy Hospital opened, and organized labor began to take shape. Adams later served as an appointed judge on the Court of Common Pleas. He died in Lower St. Clair Township, Pennsylvania, and is buried in Allegheny Cemetery beside his wife, Mary (Section 25, Lot 117).
Adams and Mary had 18 children—12 boys and 6 girls. Their names were not recorded, and many were born outside a hospital. Thirteen of the children were born in France. Mary died in labor during the birth of their 18th child.
