Fred Atkinson (educator)
Fred Washington Atkinson (May 23, 1865 – October 21, 1941) was an American educator and administrator. He led education in the Philippines as general superintendent during the U.S. colonial period (1900–1903) and later served as president of the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (1904–1925). He emphasized vocational training for Filipinos. Born in Reading, Massachusetts, Atkinson earned a BA from Harvard in 1890 and married Winnifred G. Whitford that year. He studied at universities in Berlin, Halle, Leipzig, and Jena, and at the Sorbonne, receiving his PhD from Leipzig in 1893. He died in Tucson, Arizona, at age 76.
