Franz Stoppel (3 October 1930 – 10 April 2007) was an Austrian chess player who held the FIDE Master title. He was one of Austria’s top players in the 1960s and 1970s, winning bronze medals in the Austrian Championship in 1965, 1967 and 1977, and he was part of Mitropa Cup winning teams in 1977.

Stoppel represented Austria in several major events:
- Chess Olympiads: 1966 Havana (3rd board), 1968 Lugano (3rd board), 1974 Nice (second reserve), and 1978 Buenos Aires (3rd board).
- European Team Chess Championship preliminaries: 1970 (5th board) and 1980 (4th board).
- Clare Benedict Cup: competed in 1968 (Bad Aibling), 1973 (Gstaad), 1977 (Copenhagen), and 1979 (Cleveland).
- Mitropa Cup: 1976 Innsbruck (4th board) with an individual gold medal, 1977 Bad Kohlgrub (2nd board) with a team gold, 1981 Luxembourg City (1st board), and 1982 Bourgoin-Jallieu (3rd board) with a team bronze.

His peak rating was 2350 in January 1978.
