Frank Rosaly
Frank Rosaly (born May 30, 1974) is a Puerto Rican–American drummer, composer, and sound designer. He is known for a clear, flexible approach to drumming that crosses jazz, improvisation, rock, and experimental music. He also writes music for film.
Rosaly was born in Phoenix, Arizona. His mother, Carmen Amoros, was a secretary, and his father, Francisco Rosaly, was an accountant. He has a sister named Frances. He graduated from Thunderbird High School in 1992 and earned a bachelor's degree in percussion performance from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. He began his career in the Flagstaff and Phoenix scenes, spent time in Los Angeles, then returned to NAU around 1999–2000. While there, he played with the Raging Jazz Project, which included future collaborators, and he studied with Billy Higgins from 1998 to 1999.
In 2001 Rosaly moved to Chicago, where he became a prominent figure in the local scene. He was named Best Jazz Musician by the Chicago Reader in 2013. He leads the solo project Milkwork, which explores electronically manipulated percussion, and runs his own label, Molk Records. In 2016 he relocated to Amsterdam and has continued to work with artists and groups in Chicago, New York, and Europe, including OBOL LE and All Ellington. His work spans performing, composing for film, and collaborating with many other improvisers and jazz musicians. He records for labels such as Delmark, Utech, Atavistic, and Rune Grammofon.
