Florida Center for Investigative Reporting (FCIR) was a nonprofit newsroom founded in 2010 by Florida journalists Trevor Aaronson and Mc Nelly Torres. Its mission was to investigate corruption, waste, and miscarriages of justice in Florida. In August 2021, FCIR ceased operations and was absorbed by Inside Climate News. FCIR published investigations such as claims that Florida state officials told Department of Environmental Protection employees not to use terms like global warming, climate change, or sustainability in communications. It also reported that private parties repeatedly requested records about companies hired by state agencies and that some of these requests were followed by lawsuits, which led to proposals to modify Florida’s sunshine law to protect those businesses. FCIR also explored the rise of toll lanes in Florida and, in 2011, helped uncover diploma mills in high schools. More details about FCIR’s investigations are available on its website.
