First Saikia ministry

The First Saikia ministry was the Assam government led by Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia of the Indian National Congress. It came to power after the 1983 Assam Legislative Assembly election and stayed in office until 23 December 1985.

Formation and leadership: The ministry began on 28 February 1983 after the election. It had a strong majority in the Assembly: 91 of 114 seats (about 80%).

Governors: Prakash Mehrotra, Tribeni Sahai Misra, and Bhishma Narain Singh served as governors during this period.

Cabinet: The initial cabinet had 13 ministers, including former chief ministers Anwara Taimur and Kesab Chandra Gogoi. On 2 April 1983, 16 more ministers joined. On 17 May 1983, 3 more joined, bringing the total to 32 ministers.

Dissolution and succession: The ministry ended on 23 December 1985. It was preceded by President's rule and succeeded by Mahanta I.
