F-Zero Climax
F-Zero Climax is a racing game for the Game Boy Advance. It was developed by Suzak and published by Nintendo, and released in Japan on October 21, 2004. It was the last F-Zero game for 19 years until F-Zero 99 arrived in 2023.
Gameplay is similar to previous entries: you choose a vehicle and race on many tracks, avoiding obstacles. The game is 2D, but uses a Mode 7–style effect to make the track feel like it’s 3D as you race. You can store and use speed boosts, and your energy acts as the car’s health. Energy recharges when you drive over pink plates on tracks. You can drift with air brakes (L and R) to navigate corners. Two attacks are available: a spin attack (new to the 2D F-Zero games) and a side attack; you can spin during a speed boost for extra damage.
Climax offers many modes and options, including four control layouts. In Grand Prix, you race against 23 opponents on three laps per track across four cups: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Time Attack lets you complete tracks as fast as possible. Zero Test features 36 time trials on short track sections. Survival is mission-based, with challenges like completing courses with low health or finishing a race on a risky, guardrail-free section by braking. Completing Survival challenges unlocks a character bio tied to the F-Zero GP Legend anime.
Multiplayer supports 2–4 players. Edit mode lets you create tracks by placing pieces with various shapes and obstacles. Tracks can be saved to 30 slots and shared with others via a Game Link Cable, and you can transfer tracks using a track-specific password.
Graphics mimic a 3D look with Mode 7-style scaling and rotation. While visually improved over earlier 2D F-Zero games, some assets are reused from past titles. The sound is often noted for reusing music, and the announcer voice has received mixed opinions.
F-Zero Climax was announced after leaks from Japanese retailers and was Japan-only at release. It was later re-released on the Wii U Virtual Console in 2015, followed by an English fan translation in 2021, and a non-Japanese release through Nintendo Classics in 2024. Reviewers praised the track editor and the variety of Survival and Zero Test challenges, but criticized the Grand Prix for its short tracks and uneven difficulty. Some welcomed improvements in visuals and controls, while others felt the game resembled more of an expansion than a true sequel.
Overall, F-Zero Climax is the third F-Zero game on the Game Boy Advance and the last before a long hiatus, until F-Zero 99 arrived in 2023.
