Fénétrange is a small town in northeastern France, in the Moselle department of the Grand Est region. The Saar River runs through the village, which sits near the border with the Alsace bossue. It’s part of the Lorraine regional natural park.

The name means “dwellings on the edge of a bend.” It has many historical forms and was first mentioned in 1070 in a document about minting coins. In 1224, Merbode de Malberg became the first lord of Fénétrange. In the Middle Ages it was a fortified town known for being hard to conquer.

Culture and events: Since 1978, Fénétrange hosts an annual music and gastronomy festival called Festival de Fénétrange, musique et gastronomie. The town keeps a medieval night watchman tradition, and from July to September you can see the watchman patrolling in medieval dress. In late November to early January there are winter festivities, including a traditional Christmas market.

Population and size: The commune covers about 114.49 square kilometers and has around 639 residents (2023). Elevation ranges from 227 to 317 meters.
