Escalante Western Railway (ESWR) is a subsidiary of the Western Fuels Association. Its only job was to haul coal between Escalante Junction (east of Gallup, New Mexico) and the Lee Ranch Mine owned by Peabody Coal Company, north of Grants, New Mexico. In January 2020, Tri-State Electrical Co-Op, the owner of the Escalante Generating Station, announced the plant would close by the end of 2020. With the plant’s closure planned, ESWR lost its customers, and the last coal shipment for the generating station left the El Segundo Coal Mine on April 29, 2020.
