Upper Hunter is an electoral district of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. It has existed in three periods: 1859–1894, 1904–1920, and from 1927 to today. The seat has been abolished and recreated several times, and by-elections were common when members died or resigned. When it was re-created in 1927, it used parts of the abolished seats of Robertson and Rylstone.

Key points:
- In earlier years, vacancies led to by-elections after resignations or deaths of MPs, including figures from the Country and Liberal Reform parties.
- In the 1920s the district was re-established from Robertson and Rylstone. William Fleming had been the member for Robertson, and John Fitzpatrick was the member for Rylstone.
- After 1927, several by-elections were held because sitting members resigned or sought other offices, and some elections were later overturned for irregularities, such as a June by-election being annulled due to two polls at Belltrees.
- Over time, some members moved on to the Legislative Council or to contest federal seats.

Overall, Upper Hunter’s history is marked by reshaping, resignations, and by-elections that reflected changes in state and federal political careers.
