Eileen Rose
Eileen Rose Giadone, born January 31, 1965, in Saugus, a Boston suburb, is an American singer‑songwriter known for eclectic Americana music. She has released 12 solo studio albums, toured Europe and the US with her band The Holy Wreck, and is also a member of The Silver Threads.
Rose grew up in a close‑knit Italian‑Irish American family with five sisters and three brothers. She began writing songs as a teenager, taught herself to read music and play guitar, and worked as a waitress while studying criminal law before choosing a full‑time music career. She self‑funded a folk album and fronted indie‑rock bands Daisy Chain, Medici Slot Machine and Fledgling.
In 1991 she moved to north London, England. With Fledgling she played the London club circuit and toured the US East Coast. Fledgling signed to Nine Inch Nails’ TVT label and released a self‑titled album in 1995 before disbanding. The Fledgling song “August” appeared on the Two If by Sea soundtrack. After the split, Rose wrote very personal songs in an Essex cottage and began performing solo. She was spotted by Larry Love of Alabama 3, who backed her for a few shows, and Geoff Travis of Rough Trade Records offered her a solo deal.
Her debut album Shine Like It Does was released in the UK in October 2000, recorded at Monnow Valley Studio and featuring several Alabama 3 members. The Party Dress EP followed, with additional tracks later added to Shine Like It Does for the US release. The title track “Shining” was used in Disney’s The Rookie, and “Lie To Me” appeared in Felicity.
Rose’s second album, Long Shot Novena (2002), was described as “spit ’n’ sawdust country filtered through the Velvet Underground.” She toured the US with Frank Black and Ed Harcourt. In 2003 she returned to the US, taught herself piano, and wrote new songs on Martha’s Vineyard. The album Come the Storm was recorded at Long View Farm in Massachusetts and released in the UK in 2005 and in the US in 2007 on Wildflower Records.
Her fourth album At Our Tables (2008) was released in Europe and recorded in Detroit, co‑produced by Al Sutton and Eric Hoegemeyer, with members of her touring band The Holy Wreck. The track “$20 Shoes” gained popularity online, and BBC Radio 2 playlisted “Doesn’t Mean A Thing,” for which she also did a live session.
At the end of 2008 Rose moved to Nashville and formed The Holy Wreck with guitarist Gilbert and drummer Nate Stalfa. She recorded Luna Turista (2009) with them, partly in Nashville and partly in Berlin, with a US release planned for 2011. She contributed to the Joey’s Song project in 2010, recording “Oh Johnny Lebeck” with Gilbert.
When not recording, Rose performs in Nashville’s Lower Broad with The Silver Threads, a classic country/honky‑tonk cover band she helped form in 2009. The band features Gilbert and other players and released The Silver Threads in 2010. Rose has toured extensively with The Holy Wreck, headlining in the UK, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, and has opened for many artists in the US and Europe.
