Edith Stephens Wetland Park
Edith Stephens Wetland Park is a nature reserve in Cape Town, South Africa. It covers 39 hectares and protects a large seasonal wetland and surrounding fynbos plants, including Cape Flats Sand Fynbos and Cape Flats Dune Strandveld. The park is home to about 100 bird species, many amphibians, reptiles and mammals, including the endangered Western Leopard Toad. Seven plant species in the park are Red Data plants, meaning they are rare or threatened.
The park began with land donated by botanist Edith Layard Stephens to protect Isoetes capensis, a plant that grows only here. After more land was added, the park was named Edith Stephens Wetland Park. It is run by the City of Cape Town with help from the local community. Facilities include an Environmental Education Centre, boardwalk trails, a picnic area, a bird hide, and a garden of medicinal plants.
