ENS 700 Field
ENS 700 Field at SDSU
ENS 700 Field is a modern, multipurpose athletic field on the campus of San Diego State University in San Diego, California. It opened on October 3, 2019. The field measures 135 by 60 yards (123 by 55 meters) and covers about 3 acres. It uses artificial turf with a special underlayment to reduce injuries and a cooler infill. The project cost about $5 million. It was designed by Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects and built by Swinerton. It is the home field for the SDSU Aztecs Rugby teams—men compete in Division 1-A California Conference and women in Division II Pacific Desert Conference.
Location and access: The field is near Campanile Mall on Montezuma Mesa on the SDSU campus. The San Diego Trolley Green Line at the SDSU Transit Center provides public transit access.
History: This site has served as a campus recreation field since the 1930s, with various changes over the years. In 2018, students voted to expand recreation facilities, and Associated Students approved the ENS 700 Field renovation in November 2018. Construction took place in 2019 and finished in time for the fall semester. The project was named American Public Works Association’s Project of the Year in 2020.
Sustainability and design: Replacing natural grass with artificial turf enables year-round use and improved durability. The lighting uses focused vertical LEDs to reduce light spill and save energy, improving safety at night. A new pedestrian path and landscape work create a park-like setting with seating, curved terrace walls, decomposed granite paths, and perimeter plantings that preserve trees and soften the edges.
