Dracaena fernaldii
Dracaena fernaldii, commonly called Lanai hala pepe, is a rare flowering plant in the Asparagaceae family. It is endemic to the Hawaiian island of Lāna‘i, meaning it grows nowhere else. It lives in dry forest at elevations around 490–670 meters (1,610–2,200 feet).
The species is federally listed as endangered in the United States and is also considered endangered by the IUCN. There are about 400–1,000 plants remaining in the wild, and little recruitment has been seen in the past decade. The reasons for this are not clear, but habitat loss is the main threat. Some older scientific names for the plant include Pleomele fernaldii and Chrysodracon fernaldii.
