Discis Knowledge Research
Discis Knowledge Research, founded in Toronto in 1988, turned children’s stories into CD-ROM interactive books. By 1993 the company had 20 interactive titles, including The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tell-Tale Heart, and Thomas’ Snowsuit. That year they sold more than 300,000 discs, mainly in North America. The company’s two main brands were Little Kids Can Read and Kids Can Read. The software lets kids look up word definitions, hear pronunciations, identify parts of speech, and work with questions and commentary. MacUser noted that series like Living Books and Kids Can Read operate on two levels: you follow the story and you explore its contents. Discis Books is a line of interactive storybooks from Discis Knowledge Research. Entertainment Weekly said interactive storybooks like Living Books’ Harry and the Haunted House promote less reading comprehension than more fact-focused CD-ROMs like Discis Books’ Thomas’ Snowsuit. Kids Basics is a sister series of four educational games for children aged 3 to 6 who are learning to read. The brand began shipping on February 28, 1994. The titles were written by Susan Amerikaner and illustrated by Judy Ziegler. MacUser called My Silly CD of Counting funny and effective.
