Dhum Dhadaka is a 1985 Marathi-language comedy film directed and produced by Mahesh Kothare under the Jenma Films International banner. It’s a remake of the Tamil movie Kadhalikka Neramillai (1964) and features an ensemble cast that includes Ashok Saraf, Mahesh Kothare, Laxmikant Berde, Nivedita Joshi-Saraf, Surekha Rane, Prema Kiran, and Sharad Talwalkar. The film runs for about 147 minutes. It had a budget of around ₹6.5 lakh and performed well at the box office, earning roughly ₹65 lakh. It released on 19 August 1985 in Maharashtra.

Synopsis
A wealthy, spoiled girl named Gauri meets a poor, village-based young man named Mahesh Jawalkar. Mahesh works for Gauri’s widowed father, Dhanaji Ramchandra Wakde, a proud industrialist. After they clash and Mahesh loses his job, he tries to win Dhanaji’s approval for marriage by enlisting help from his friend Ashok, who pretends to be Mahesh’s wealthy father. Comedy and confusion ensue as Ashok’s disguise intersects with Dhanaji’s family dynamics. Meanwhile, Dhanaji’s son Lakshya, an aspiring filmmaker, supports Mahesh and Ashok and helps pursue a romance of his own with Ambakka Rede. The story follows their schemes and how they navigate love, family expectations, and social differences to win Dhanaji’s blessing.

Production
For casting, Mahesh Kothare initially sought to cast Ashok Saraf in a Marathi version of Pyar Kiye Jaa and considered Shashi Kapoor for a lead role. He ultimately cast Ashok Saraf opposite him, with Laxmikant Berde taking the Mehmood-like role after a prior audition. Ranjana Deshmukh was initially slated to act with Ashok Saraf but had an accident that resulted in Surekha Rane taking her place. Nivedita Joshi-Saraf was cast opposite Mahesh, while Prema Kiran ultimately played the village girl Ambakka after other actresses were considered.

Soundtrack
The music for Dhum Dhadaka was composed by the duo Anil-Arun, with lyrics by Shantaram Nandgaonkar. The soundtrack was released as a feature-film album accompanying the 1985 release, and the songs are noted for their energetic and playful tone that suits the film’s comedy and romance.

Accolades
The film received attention at the 32nd Filmfare Awards, with nominations in several Marathi categories: Best Film – Marathi, Best Director – Marathi for Mahesh Kothare, and Best Actor – Marathi for Laxmikant Berde.
