David W. Slater
David Walker Slater (1921–February 9, 2010) was a Canadian economist and public servant who served as president of York University from 1970 to 1973. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he earned a B.Com. from the University of Manitoba in 1942 and served in the Canadian Army during World War II, being Mentioned in Dispatches. He later earned a B.A. in economics from Queen’s University in 1947, and a Master of Arts in 1950 and a Ph.D. in 1957 from the University of Chicago. Slater joined Queen’s University as a faculty member in 1952, becoming a full professor in 1961 and serving as Dean of the School of Graduate Studies from 1968 to 1970. After York, he moved to the federal government as General Director of Fiscal Policy and Economic Analysis in the Department of Finance in 1973. He led the Economic Council of Canada from 1978 to 1985 and chaired Ontario’s Task Force on Insurance in 1986. He died in Ottawa in 2010.
