Dem Atlas
deM atlaS, born Joshua Evans Turner on May 31, 1992, is an American rapper from Saint Paul, Minnesota. He was born in Akron, Ohio, and moved to Minneapolis with his family when he was four. He attended Eagan High School.
Music career
- 2013: Self-released his debut EP Charle Brwn. He signed with Rhymesayers Entertainment, which re-released Charle Brwn on its label.
- 2014: Released the Dwnr EP to strong responses, and Pitchfork named it one of the Best Minnesota Hip-Hop Releases of 2014. He joined Atmosphere’s summer tour and toured with Joey Bada$$. He also worked with Guante and Rube in the group Sifu Hotman, which released the album Embrace the Sun.
- 2015: Spent much of the year touring the United States and released the single “With a Smile.” The Village Voice named him one of the rap artists to watch that year.
- 2016: Put out the MF Dem mixtape, a cult favorite featuring 13 MF Doom instrumentals. He opened for Atmosphere on tours in 2016–2017.
- 2018: Released his debut solo studio album Bad Actress, performed at Soundset 2018, and continued touring.
- 2019: Traveled and performed across the US and Europe.
- 2020: Rhymesayers faced internal controversies, and the label ended its working relationship with deM atlaS. He denied the allegations, and no charges were filed.
- 2021: Signed a management deal with San Francisco Supply, but the partnership ended after about a year. On November 12, 2021, he self-released the redeMption EP and continued working on new music.
Influences include Pharcyde, Nas, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Louis Armstrong, and Billie Holiday.
