David Wetherall (born 14 March 1971 in Sheffield) is an English football coach and former professional defender. He is currently an academy strategic advisor at Huddersfield Town.

As a player, Wetherall spent most of his career in the Premier League with Leeds United and Bradford City. He began at Sheffield Wednesday but did not make a first-team appearance, then joined Leeds United in 1991. He helped Leeds win the 1991–92 league title and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club, scoring several important goals.

In 1999, he moved to Bradford City for a club‑record £1.4 million. He played at Bradford for nine seasons, became captain, and was known for his durability—he played every league minute in his first Bradford season. His most famous moment came on the final day of the 1999–2000 season when he scored the winner against Liverpool to help Bradford stay in the Premier League.

Wetherall also had spells as caretaker and player-manager at Bradford City (2003 and 2007) and later joined the club’s coaching staff. He left Bradford in 2011 to become head of youth development with the Football League. He was inducted into Show Racism The Red Card’s hall of fame in 2007 for his anti-racism work.

Off the field, Wetherall studied chemistry at the University of Sheffield while playing for Sheffield Wednesday’s reserve team, and in 1992 he graduated with a first‑class honours degree—the first Premier League player to achieve such a qualification. He still lives in football, guiding youth development and coaching, and in September 2023 joined Huddersfield Town as an academy strategic advisor.
