Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is a 2012 visual novel by Spike Chunsoft. It is the sequel to Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and follows Hajime Hinata, a new student at Hope’s Peak Academy who wakes up on a tropical island called Jabberwock Island with fifteen other “Ultimate” students. Their school trip is hijacked by Monokuma, a talking bear who forces them into a killing game: they must murder a classmate and avoid getting caught in a class trial, or everyone else will be executed.

Gameplay is split into two parts. In the School Life section, you interact with classmates during Free Time to earn Hope Fragments that unlock new skills for use in trials. You also collect Monocoins by finding hidden figures and use them to buy gifts for others. In the Deadly Life section, you investigate crimes to gather evidence for the Class Trial. The Class Trial combines arguing with “Truth Bullets,” shooting down others’ points, and solving puzzles. New trial features include Rebuttal Showdowns, Panic Talk Action, Hangman’s Gambit improvements, Logic Dive (a snowboard-style puzzle), and Spot Select (examining important clues). There are also several mini-games and side modes, like Island Mode and a Monomi-controlled mini-game, Magical Girl Miracle☆Monomi. An Anniversary Edition later added a gallery and other enhancements.

The story centers on Hajime and his fellow students as they uncover deeper truths about their past, the island, and a future organization called the Future Foundation. Key twists reveal that some characters are not who they seem, and that Nagito Komaeda and others are connected to the remnants of the deadly group known as Ultimate Despair. A major revelation is that Chiaki Nanami is actually an AI program created to observe and protect the students. Hajime learns he is Izuru Kamukura, a central figure in the plan to create “Ultimate Hope.” Faced with despair and manipulation, Hajime and the surviving students decide not to graduate. They reset the system, which frees Usami and deletes Alter Ego Junko. In the end, Hajime and Makoto Naegi (from the first game) wake up in the real world, vowing to build a future free from despair.

Development and design notes
- The game was developed after Kazutaka Kodaka wrote the tie-in light novel Danganronpa Zero, which foreshadowed a sequel. Kodaka aimed for a setting inspired by Lost, with a twisty island story and more human, emotionally driven characters.
- Monokuma’s rabbit rival, Monomi (Usami), was introduced to add variety and a different dynamic.
- The cast includes Hajime Hinata, Nagito Komaeda, Chiaki Nanami, Byakuya Togami (revealed as the Ultimate Impostor), and others designed by Rui Komatsuzaki.
- In the Japanese version, Hajime was voiced by Minami Takayama. For the English version, Hajime was voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch and Nagito by Bryce Papenbrook.
- An early re-release package, Danganronpa 1・2 Reload, combined the first two games for PS Vita and later came to PS4. An enhanced mobile version, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair Anniversary Edition, released in 2020, added a gallery mode. The game released on Switch in 2021 and on Xbox One and Windows in 2022, with Xbox Game Pass launching the same day.
