City of Greater Taree
Greater Taree City Council was a local government area on New South Wales’ Mid North Coast. It existed from 1981 until 12 May 2016, when it joined with Gloucester and Great Lakes to form Mid-Coast Council. It was created by merging the Manning Shire with the Taree and Wingham Municipal Councils, and its council seat was in Taree, near the Manning River, the Pacific Highway and the North Coast railway.
The area covered about 3,730 square kilometres. The last mayor was Paul Hogan. The council area included Taree, Wingham and many surrounding towns and localities.
In the 2011 census, 46,541 people lived there. About half were male and half female. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people made up about 5.4%. The median age was 46, higher than the national median. Around 18.6% were aged 0–14, and 22.5% were 65 or older. Most residents reported Australian or Anglo-Saxon ancestry, and over 93% spoke only English at home.
The council had nine councillors, including a directly elected mayor. The last election was in 2012.
In 2015, the NSW government proposed merging several councils, and on 12 May 2016 Greater Taree merged with Gloucester and Great Lakes to form Mid-Coast Council.
