DANIPS stands for the Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli Police Services. It is the police service for the Union Territories of India and was formerly called the Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Service (DHANI) from 1967 to 1972. DANIPS is part of the Central Civil Services and recruits directly through the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the UPSC. The selected officers are grouped as Group B and handle law and order and policing in Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. They form a feeder cadre to the Indian Police Service (IPS).

Recruitment and training: Most officers are recruited directly through the CSE each year; the rest are promoted from non-gazetted UT police officers. Recruits are trained at the Police Training College, Jharoda Kalan, by the Delhi Police.

Structure and authority: The Union Territories Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs is the cadre controlling authority. As of 2018, DANIPS had 510 personnel against a sanctioned strength of 533. The service has four grades: Entry Grade (Group B), Selection Grade (Group A), Junior Administrative Grade-II (Group A), and Junior Administrative Grade-I (Group A).

Promotions and posts: Entry Grade officers have a two-year probation. Entry and Selection Grade posts include Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in Delhi and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in other UTs. Junior Administrative Grade I and II posts include Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Add. DCP) in Delhi and a post at the Police Training College. Promotions follow a time-scale: 8 years to reach Selection Grade, 13 years to reach JAG-II, and 18 years to reach JAG-I.

Roles and further career: Officers work in various wings (like Crime and Traffic) or in a sub-division as Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPO). DSP and Add. SP ranks can also serve as SDPOs. DANIPS officers can be promoted to the IPS and, if so, may be appointed as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Delhi. IPS officers in the UTs belong to the AGMUT cadre (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories).
